I keep getting asked this, and here is my answer:
Most likely no!
I have been reading over the press release, and it is fair to say there are a lot of riders with impressive qualifications. I do find myself looking at their profiles and thinking “I bet I would have a lot to talk about with this person” or “this person has skills that would compliment mine really well” but at the end of it, I am not ready to commit to riding with one person.
Don’t get me wrong, I hope to share the road with others. I hope that at various points I can meet up with each and every rider and ride a bit of the way with them, share stories, and cheer on each other’s progress.
It has been difficult for me to put into words, but I came across a blog post that summed up exactly how I felt:
Yes, I too like to be in by a certain time. Yes, I am more than comfortable speaking to crowds and being “on”. Yes, I love to share and write. Yes yes yes!
One line that particularly struck me deep was “I’ve never felt alone with my horse; I welcome that time.”
After all, they are the reason I am doing this thing. Riding alone, I can better listen to their stories, develop that inter-species friendship, and enjoy 1000kms of peace with them.
My decision to ride “alone” isn’t about trying to win, its about taking it at my own pace, listening to what each horse has to offer me, and just enjoying the ride. That’s what it is all about, besides how could I be lonely when you are all there with me in spirit?
