Running – Running on the roads the week before had started to give me shin splints so bad I could barely walk let alone jog. On Wednesday I had my session with Heather and she suggested a few exercises to help ease and prevent them – toe and calf lifts. So I have been doing these behind my desk as frequently as I can remember. I also am switching to anaerobic threshold training so less pounding the pavement. I was without a car this weekend however, so I did run to the barn once and had a bit of an epiphany: I still run like a sprinter. I was feeling the most pain when I was going down the hills on my toes. So I ran the rest of the way, correcting my form. I wouldn’t ask Bentley to do 25 miles in a dressage frame, so why would I run distance in a sprint frame. I did my 9k run easily and was pain free the next day!
Riding – Since this weekend was supposed to be Aprilfest but cancelled due to ice still covering the trails, I decided to do a faux-Aprilfest at home. So our plan was to do the 25 mile set speed, and that was what I did. It was pretty torturous since we only have permission to ride the hard packed roads (internal) despite the fields and sand rings now being perfectly dry. We did lap after lap of the road which is about 1km long. Ouch! Some music made it a bit more tolerable and Linda joined us at our halfway point so that kept it a bit more interesting. Once completed, I took his heartrate after 13 minutes (though set speed would usually be 30 minutes, I didnt really feel the need to wait) and he was already down to 44 bpm. Speed of 6.78, we would have earned a grade 1. So I am satisfied that we are good to go for a slow 50 at Cayuse Canter. Bentley still had a ton of go at the end, and looked really good too.
Misc – I am almost one week into using The Edge. I started with one capsule and have been adding one a day to avoid symptoms of detox (and my recommended dosage as an endurance athlete is 8-10/day) so I am almost up to my full dose now. The website says that I should expect a few weeks to notice much of a difference, but one thing that I have noticed already is I am becoming a morning person. Instead of dragging my butt out of bed every day, I am getting up and feeling bright right away. I am productive almost immediately (pre-espresso!) and I have been able to get more chores done in the morning before going to work. I still am super tired at the end of the day, but when you do as much as I do, that’s to be expected and being able to get up again is a huge bonus for me! Lee has had his hands into my capsules too and says that his mood has improved significantly too. Not sure about Bentley yet… he can’t talk, but he HAS been quite agreeable through our rides. Not that he is ever too naughty, but I suspect he may be feeling the good vibes Lee and I have too.
And 2 short helmet cams for your amusement.
