This winter has been snow, snow and more snow! Now that all of it is melting and it isn’t so cold I have finally been able to ride. I have been riding for about a month now. Sadly, because of the fact that the Ganaraska forest doesn’t open until April 30, I have had to ride on the road. One of my many goals is to try a different equestrian discipline every year; this year I tried roping.
About 2 weeks ago I took Angel to a roping clinic. I have done roping on other horses before, but never with Angel. I didn’t know how she was going to react. I was really surprised that she was so good.
We started by following an artificial cow around the arena, which was being pulled by a horse. At the beginning we were walking and Angel was exactly where she was supposed to be. Then we picked up the pace to a trot and she was just as good. We loaded all the cows into the chute. I was happy that she wanted to chase the cows. She wasn’t so great with the noise of the chute. When they hit the bar to let the cow out it makes a really loud noise. Angel thought that the noise was very scary. She would run backwards away from the chute, but the guys said she was a lot better than most of the horses on their first time.
When it was my turn to go in the box Angel wanted nothing to do with it. I finally got her in and chased the cows out a couple of times.
There are so many different things that you can do with horses. It would take more than a life time to do them all. Try something new each year, you may like it! You may not, but – hey you’ve tried it! I know that even if roping isn’t my sport it was a lot of fun to try.
